They’re coming in thick and fast

New test clips are coming in fast as people testing the new ARRI Alexa realize the turnaround efficiencies of recording straight to Prores onboard. The clip below illustrates extremes of contrast from fire to dark starry nights.

A very nice test

I like testing lighting and images, I’m not much of a chart guy but would rather see something a little real world. Charts, exposure bracketing & filtration tests are important but I love this one. Recorded to an AJA Ki pro at Prores 4:2:2 while Arri’s onboard option is in beta. Just wait until we see what 4:4:4 can produce. These are the most filmic images I’ve seen so far from the camera and certainly they complement the talent! High fashion is always going to test the rendering of any camera system and these images really tell me that the Alexa SHINES!

Some sense

I’ve always been one to use the right tool for the job. Mike Most says it best in an attempt to set the record straight..it’s not an us or them! I’ve used many, and will use many cameras in my career. The Alexa just happens to be one I’ll own which seems to provide an answer to many of  Mike’s musings. Arri obviously thought along the same lines.

The windy city rental company took delivery of their first Alexa this week and there is now a daily blog documenting initial tests. These are observations of the author only and do not reflect my own thoughts. I’ll be posting my own when the kit is on the ground and it has been well and truly rung out.
